JoAnn Mermis, assistant brokerage manager of Sotheby's International Realty - Santa Barbara, is passionate about her region and working with others to achieve their full potential. She is known for her methodical, balanced approach to both business and life. As the assistant manager, JoAnn employs the same tactics she used as a real estate agent to coach others for success. The cornerstone of her strategy is a thoughtful combination of knowledge and experience. Using her extensive familiarity of the Santa Barbara and Montecito area with her negotiation, communication, and conflict-resolution skills, she mentors and advises agents yearning to break into the competitive Santa Barbara market.
Prior to joining Sotheby's International Realty in 2018, JoAnn enjoyed her role for nearly two decades as the assistant manager for another high-volume brokerage. She remained active in sales throughout that time and maintained her status in the top 1% of sales. She also earned the Good Neighbor Award from the Santa Barbara Association of Realtors, a top accolade recognized by professionals throughout the state. JoAnn honed her management skills at Fred Sands Realty from 1989-1994. Her drive and initiative helped transform the company and her strong leadership was quickly recognized, earning her a promotion to the leadership team and role of vice president. Under her supervision, the number of agents more than doubled and the market share increased by 300%. Before embarking on her real estate career, she taught school in Houston, Texas and worked for Delta Airlines in Dallas, Texas.
JoAnn has been active in the Santa Barbara community since 1977. Her roles have included former President of Santa Barbara Beautiful, former President of Montecito Union School PTA, vice president of Childhelp USA, two-time winner of the Rotary Paul Harris Award at the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara, Women's Board of Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Board of Film Festival, and board member of Freedom to Choose Prison Project. The volunteer role which she has found to be most rewarding is the Freedom to Choose Prison Project, where she is able to apply her knowledge of conflict-resolution and lead groups in teaching life-management skills to inmates of high-security prisons. JoAnn also enjoys teaching yoga as a certified yoga instructor and spending time in Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez Valley with her family.
