Once the longtime home of noted San Francisco painter Betty Guy, this culturally significant home on Bernal Heights’ desirable North Slope now reveals an exceptional contemporary renovation behind its restored Victorian facade. After a nearly two-year renovation, 147 Ripley is ready for its next chapter.
The bright foyer announces a luminous, loft-like space grounded by an expanse of wide-plank, European Oak flooring. Just beyond are the living/dining areas and chef’s kitchen – leading to floor-to-ceiling windows framing unobstructed 270-degree views of the San Francisco Skyline from Twin Peaks to Downtown to the East Bay.
The kitchen itself is a dream with custom cabinets, quartzite countertops, a suite of the latest Bertazzoni appliances, and an island designed to be the center of any gathering. The bright living room, with a fireplace and two walls of glass, opens to a deck seemingly cantilevered into the view.
The main level includes an en-suite bedroom, a second bedroom or study/office, and a full bath. A clever set of custom steel and oak stairs unfolds along one wall, leading to a completely finished, windowed attic. In this upstairs space, Betty Guy rendered her famous series of artworks of San Francisco cityscapes.
An elegant stairway of glass panels and rolled steel leads to the lower level, arranged around a spacious family/media room and atrium with a planted wall and built-in benches. Beyond is the airy master suite, replete with luxuries including a view bedroom area, view sitting area, sizeable walk-in closet and spa bath with “switch” glass. The lower level includes two additional bedrooms, two additional full baths, and a laundry room. Rounding out the amenities, the home is fully airconditioned and there’s parking for one car.
147 Ripley Street represents an exceptional opportunity to own a spectacularly renovated San Francisco view home with significant cultural history in a highly desirable location.

About Betty Guy & 147 Ripley
Betty Guy (1920-2016), a native San Franciscan and well-known watercolorist and printmaker, was a longtime supporter of the San Francisco Opera who considered the War Memorial Opera House her second home. As the house artist for the San Francisco Opera and Ballet for decades, Ms. Guy produced more than 400 opera- and dance- related works.
At her home on Ripley, Ms. Guy was famed for her afternoon teas, entertaining friends such as Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland. And when San Francisco needed an official gift for the visit of HRH Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, the City chose a painting by Ms. Guy. Beyond opera, she loved to travel. For decades, Ms. Guy painted famous scenes all over the globe. Her work was represented by Gumps, San Francisco’s historic and luxe venue for works of art and antiques; several of her etchings and watercolors are on loan from The Betty Guy Collection have been included in the staging of 147 Ripley Street and are available for purchase.
