About Betty Guy & 147 Ripley

Betty Guy (1920-2016), a native San Franciscan and well-known watercolorist and printmaker, was a longtime supporter of the San Francisco Opera who considered the War Memorial Opera House her second home. As the house artist for the San Francisco Opera and Ballet for decades, Ms. Guy produced more than 400 opera- and dance- related works.

At her home on Ripley, Ms. Guy was famed for her afternoon teas, entertaining friends such as Luciano Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland. And when San Francisco needed an official gift for the visit of HRH Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, the City chose a painting by Ms. Guy. Beyond opera, she loved to travel. For decades, Ms. Guy painted famous scenes all over the globe. Her work was represented by Gumps, San Francisco’s historic and luxe venue for works of art and antiques; several of her etchings and watercolors are on loan from The Betty Guy Collection have been included in the staging of 147 Ripley Street and are available for purchase.
