After graduating from Stanford University in 1977, Vilia worked as a journalist until her desire to return to the Monterey Peninsula brought her home.

She is also a personal property appraiser. Vilia has served many charitable organizations. When her children were in school, she was an active parent volunteer at Stevenson, Santa Catalina and Carmel High Schools.
