Mahopac and Mahopac Falls are two lake-studded hamlets in the town of Carmel in Putnam County, covering 36 square miles. Mahopac Falls is home to the communities on the three smaller lakes: Lake Secor, MacGregor and Kirk. For over 100 years, it was a popular summer resort town for elite New Yorkers. By the 1950s, the grand hotels began disappearing and Mahopac evolved into the year-round community it is today, where its residents enjoy a small-town flavor and quieter way of life. The lake, still a favorite hangout for summer recreation, lies in the center of the hamlet of Mahopac, which makes up about two-thirds of the Town of Carmel in Putnam County. Residents take pride in their hamlet's historical significance, natural beauty, fine Mahopac properties and strong community spirit.
