Katonah is a hamlet located in Bedford Township, about 40 miles north of New York City. It is one of three hamlets in the Town of Bedford, a rural and sprawling area of estates, horse farms and dirt roads in the northeast section of Westchester County. This village has its own unique flavor, enhanced by the charm of its turn-of-the-century architecture. The distinctive character is evident especially in the downtown business district where its wood-frame Victorian stores sell everything from gourmet foods to riding wear. The town has thousands of protected acres, much of it owned by the Nature Conservancy. Just a few miles east of Katonah's border is the county-owned Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, with its 4,700 acres of hiking trails. Although most of the Katonah real estate is single-family homes, an eight-block area has a number of two-family properties and two-condominium complexes. Many newcomers are young families attracted by the reputation of the Katonah-Lewisboro schools with its four elementary schools, middle school and high school where student scores consistently place in the top 10 percent of all school districts in the state.
