Irvington is located about 12 miles north of New York City and borders the Hudson River. The town is named after the author Washington Irving, who lived in a home on Sunnyside Lane from 1835 until his death in 1859. His home is now run as a museum by the preservationist Historic Hudson Valley. A popular resting place was Odell's Tavern, built in 1690, which still stands today, on South Broadway. On the riverfront is the 10-acre Matthiesen Park, a popular spot for picnickers. Other parks include Memorial Park, which features three lighted tennis courts, ball fields, a wading pool and playground equipment, and Halsey Pond, a passive green space. Irvington is characterized by its tranquil atmosphere, numerous green spaces and many natural scenic resources, an ideal setting for fine real estate.
