A little less than an hour drive from New York City is the town of Cortlandt. Cortlandt includes two incorporated villages, Croton-on-Hudson and Buchanan, as well as several hamlets such as Montrose, Crugers and Verplanck. Cortlandt dates back to 1677, when Stephanus Van Cortlandt, a merchant and the first American-born mayor of New York City, began purchasing land from the Croton River north and east to Connecticut from several tribes of Indians. The town was incorporated in 1788, but for years residents used Peekskill as their home mailing address. In 1947, Peekskill broke away from Cortlandt and incorporated as a city. Cortlandt real estate offers access to hundreds of acres of facilities, including the new 30-acre Steamboat Riverfront Park in the hamlet of Verplanck, which includes a dock. The county-owned Blue Mountain Reservation has more than seven miles of trails for hiking and biking.
