View ListingsScenically located on the Hudson River in southern Westchester County, Ardsley is one of the six incorporated villages in the town of Greenburgh, each with its own character and charm. One of the quaint river towns, this 1.25 square-mile village, with a historic atmosphere, lush greenery and a small-town type Main Street, offers real estate with some of the most breathtaking views of the river in all of Westchester County. Ardsley is just 20 miles north of New York City and approximately 38 minutes from midtown Manhattan on Metro North Railroad. The Mohican tribe of the Algonquin nation originally inhabited it, with the Indians using Ashford Avenue, the main road, as a trail to travel from the Hudson River to Long Island Sound. Later confiscated by the state, it grew slowly, with wheat and vegetable farmers as its residents. The completion of the Putnam Railroad and the New Croton Aqueduct in the 1880s brought a boom in population. In the late 19th century, many wealthy New Yorkers purchased homes in Ardsley, and settled there for suburban living. The increase in population resulted in the development of the two communities known as Ardsley Acres and Beacon Hill and the village's three schools.
