River Oaks Neighbors

Avalon, Glendower Court, Royden Oaks, Oak Estates, Afton Oaks, and Highland Village are residential “inside the Loop” neighborhoods which are contiguous to River Oaks and offer some of Houston’s most desirable places to live.

Many of the existing homes have been beautifully updated or replaced by new construction in these heavily deed restricted communities. Conscious of preserving neighborhood integrity, the civic associations strictly enforce architectural controls to protect property values.

These areas are renowned for beautiful old spreading oaks, quiet streets and old-fashioned ambience, despite the fact that downtown Houston, Highland Village Shopping Center and the Galleria are mere minutes away.

Nearby parks include River Oaks Park with recently updated playground equipment, tennis courts, a basketball court, and a charming civic building designed by one of Houston’s famous architects, John Staub. Just north of the neighborhoods, heavily wooded Memorial Park offers over 1,500 acres for golfing, biking, jogging, swimming, tennis, volleyball and baseball. There are also bridal paths and picnic areas.

Central to everything, the private Briar Club has its own tennis, swimming, dining and work-out facilities.

Houston Independent School District schools serve these neighborhoods from the elementary level through high school. Several top-flight private schools nearby include the St. John’s School and the River Oaks Baptist School.

A jewel of the area is the new Looscan Library which replaces a much-loved but woefully outdated and small 1950s building. The new facility will offer state-of-the-art programs for children and adults and will make its large conference rooms available for civic association and local club meetings.

Prices for properties in this area range upwards from the very high $400,000s for smaller existing homes to several million dollars for new construction homes.
