Four Leaf Towers

The Four-Leaf Towers are twin residential highrise buildings located at 5100 and 5110 San Felipe at Post Oak Lane. According to Martha Turner, president of Martha Turner Properties, the rose-colored glass buildings’ international design “put Houston on the map of the highrise world.” Positioned in the center of the Uptown/Galleria area, Four-Leaf Towers holds its own with residences in the Via Condotti, Zona Rosa, Rive Droit, Mayfair and Fifth Avenue.

The buildings were designed by architect emeritus and dean of the Yale School of Architecture, Cesar Pelli. Pelli believes that architecture stems from and reflects the characteristics of its time, and one of the characteristics of our time is glass. Pelli combined glass and color into the two forty-story towers, intending the facades to interact with changing patterns of sunlight. The towers are not delicate; their symmetrical shapes provide engineering strength and resistance to lateral movement; behind Pelli’s colored glass is solid wall.

The towers stand amidst a nine-acre private park reserved for the use of residents and their guests. The grounds rise from two feet at the street to five feet at the bases of the buildings, providing an uphill approach. The focal point of the front plaza is the outdoor sculpture “Polygenesis,” by sculptor Beverly Pepper. The buildings are surrounded by Bermuda grass lawns and professional landscaping interspersed by lighted walkways. A recessed recreational plaza behind includes a swimming pool, a whirlpool spa, four lighted tennis courts, canvas-covered cabanas, and an outdoor cocktail bar and grill area.

Public spaces are embellished with touches of carved woods, Italian marble and tile, and designer carpeting. On the first floor of each building is a two-story lobby, a concierge desk, a party room, co-ed health clubs, four passenger elevators, two service elevators, a garage elevator, a security station, residential mailboxes, and management offices.

Most floors have only four residences, with three basic floorplans available in addition to the penthouses. All offer views of the city from several directions, a foyer, a powder room, a wet bar, living and dining areas, a full kitchen and serving area, en suite baths, walk-in closets, and climate-controlled in-unit storage plus additional storage. Units have nine-foot-two-inch-ceilings in the living areas, minimized sound transmission between rooms, floor-mounted air handlers to reduce noise, and 15-inch sound-proof walls between residences and public areas.

Four-Leaf Towers are full service buildings operated like five-star hotels, with many around-the-clock services not found in comparable buildings. Twenty-four hour services include a roving patrol, concierge, valet parking, doorman, engineering and valet staff. Housekeeping staff are available upon request. The health clubs feature state-of-the-art exercise facilities, dry saunas and whirlpool spas, and party rooms have full kitchens and bars.

All public areas have smoke detectors, a smoke exhaust system, and a sprinkler system; emergency generators are in place should there be a power failure. Each unit is equipped with hard-wire smoke detectors and voice enunciators/horns. The concierge desks control access to the residences, verifying the admittance of visitors with homeowners. The one-level, assigned-parking garage has a security station at the single entrance/exit and televised monitoring. Shuttle elevators and staircases from the garage connect only with the two buildings’ main lobbies and emerge in full view of the concierge desks.
