John Holmes is a master of manipulating found materials into composition of poetry and function. His dramatic Avant-Green, 1997, is a monumental example of the artist's fascination with recycling and found objects that permeates his entire career. It reveals his unique approach to these materials and his ability to transform them into a medium capable of his powerful artistic expression. Winner of Garden Design's prestigious Golden Trowel Award in 1998, Holmes establishes a vibrant dialogue between the poured-in-place concrete lines of the three primary structures and the organic architecture of the gardens. The 43 acre estate is divided into a series of enchanting garden rooms and expansive rolling meadows. The visitor to American Green is inspired to participate in this "maximal work of art" where the whole space is activated into creative motion. Art and Nature, Design and Architecture collaborate in this sculpture-cum-residence-cum-event.
