Incorporated in 1739, Kent has a long history as an agricultural community and was also once a major producer of iron ore in the 19th century. It is now primarily a rural community of about 3,000 residents located in Litchfield County's west central region on the New York state line. Life in the area is a mix of rural life, education and the arts, and many have come to regard Kent as the cultural heart of Litchfield County.
The Kent School, Marvelwood and the South Kent School are all located here, and the homegrown Kent Film Festival is quickly growing into one of the most anticipated festivals in the country. Downtown Kent has become a major day trip destination for visitors from all over the Northeast, and the Civil War Soldiers Monument, at the intersection of Routes 7 and 341, serves as its unofficial gateway. The downtown area offers a mix of residential homes, specialty retail shops, art galleries and restaurants. There are also a number of small hamlets in Kent, including South Kent, Bulls Bridge, The Cobble and North Kent. The region has long served as a haven to many second-home owners from Manhattan and beyond.
