One of the five villages within the town of Washington, Washington Depot sits along the scenic banks of the Shepaug River, which meanders peacefully through its center. Situated down the hill from Washington Green, the Depot area was established in the late 19th century with the construction of the Shepaug Railroad, which operated passenger train service to and from New York City and ran a freight line until 1948. This began the area's rise to prominence as a prosperous community and a prestigious summer resort for New Yorkers who sought Washington Depot real estate to escape the city’s heat for the fresh mountain air and beautiful scenery. Today, Washington Depot serves as the town’s primary commercial district and provides the setting for the stately brick Bryan Memorial Town Hall as well as the Washington Art Association. Much of the Depot area’s wooded acreage is preserved by a local land trust, the Steep Rock Reservation, established in 1925 by Ehrick Rossiter as the town’s first open space preserve and providing miles of splendid hiking trails along the Shepaug River.
