Gaylordsville

Historic Gaylordsville is a village of New Milford and is nestled in a peaceful valley near the northwest corner of the town, surrounded by forested mountains. The Housatonic River flows through the center of Gaylordsville, where it is joined by three separate brooks. The early history of Gaylordsville is closely tied to the family of William Gaylord, who sailed from Plymouth, England on the ship Mary and John, arriving in Nantucket Harbor in 1630. He later settled in East Windsor, Connecticut. In 1712, his great-grandson Ensign William Gaylord moved with his wife Joanna to New Milford, only five years after the town was settled. Here, Gaylord worked as a surveyor and also ran a local tavern. It is thought that on one of his surveying expeditions, he became impressed with the area north of New Milford village, began taking title to parcels of the land and soon owned a large part of the valley. Today, numerous historic pieces of Gaylordsville real estate is preserved including former homes of the Gaylord family. Gaylordsville enjoys close proximity to New Milford’s charming shops and restaurants and the recreational assets of 5,420-acre Candlewood Lake, the largest lake in Connecticut.
