The town of Barnstable is made up of seven villages and is the largest community both in land area and population on Cape Cod. Public and private beaches are plentiful in its many villages, encompassing both Cape Cod Bay on the north side and Nantucket Sound on the south side. It is also the center of county institutions such as the court system and registry of deeds. Hyannis, often is referred to as the Hub of the Cape and is known for its sprawling shopping districts and its many fine restaurants. As the center of activity it is also home to the Barnstable Municipal Airport and the port for ferry lines to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. It is also home to the Cape Cod Community College, which is not only a fine educational institution but also a tremendous center for performing arts and community involvement. There are a large number of private country clubs throughout its many villages and also 2 municipal courses: Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds and Hyannis Golf Club. Barnstable truly is a blend of old Cape Cod homes and lifestyle yet is the economic and commercial center of the Cape.
