John M. Gicking

A Sotheby's International Realty veteran with nearly two decades of experience, John Gicking is a non-selling manager with the East Hampton office. Capitalizing on his expertise as a real estate agent combined with business and management skills from 15+ years on Wall Street, he fosters an environment of support and education for the agents in his office. John helps agents to realize their full potential, and his office ranks in the top echelon of all offices within the Sotheby's International Realty global network.

A former real estate agent with the company, John ranked in the top 3% of all Sotheby's International Realty associates. A large measure of his success was derived from taking advantage of unique opportunities offered by the Sotheby's brand. John attended events sponsored by Sotheby's International Realty and Sotheby's Auction House in New York, London and Hong Kong, and traveled to Sotheby's offices around the country, forging new relationships with other agents specializing in luxury real estate that helped to increase his business. Now as a manager, he leverages those experiences by promoting these same networking opportunities to agents in the office.

John is internet savvy and closely follows company initiatives in e-marketing, encouraging others to promote properties in the fast-evolving online marketplace in conjunction with the brand's renowned print marketing campaigns. He considers his agent training programs, ranging from e-skills to brand awareness, integral to his office operations.

Prior to Sotheby's International Realty, John spent 15 years in the financial industry in New York City, working in both private banking and institutional sales and trading. He graduated from Lehigh University with a degree in finance in 1980 and worked at JP Morgan in the Private Banking Group as well as Bankers Trust, heading up a fixed income trading operation.

John is on the New York Board of Directors of BuildOn, a non-profit that provides after-school programs for inner city youth and partners these programs with communities in developing countries to build grade schools for them. John raised the funds to build a primary school in a remote area of Mali, West Africa, and traveled there for the construction. On the East End, John was appointed to the Advisory Board of the Amagansett Food Institute, a non-profit that provides food for people in need, works to educate the community, especially children, on the importance of food and diet, and supports local farmers, fisherman, vintners and other food providers. An avid traveler and photographer, Gicking is also deeply interested in architecture and historic preservation.
