Vroman's to host Antoinette Portis presentation, book signing on Wednesday6 May 2014 5:33 PM
Pasadena may be best known for its annual Rose Parade, however, the metropolitan area is often recognized for its many intellectual offerings. In many of the California city's most historic areas, celebrated institutions such as art galleries, regal theaters and enduring bookstores routinely garner droves of patrons, which include both visiting tourists as well as local luxury real estate owners.
On Wednesday, May 7, one of Pasadena's most revered establishments will play host to Antoinette Portis, a New York Times bestselling author, as she leads an engaging discussion and signs copies of her latest cleverly-titled book, "Froodle." If you consider yourself a fan of literature, making plans to attend this social event could greatly be to your benefit, as it promises to be a memorable and fruitful occasion for all participants.
Portis to offer insight into book, sign copies
Beginning at 10 a.m., individuals will be offered the opportunity to listen to Portis describe her thoughts and feelings regarding her latest work - as well as personally meet her during a subsequent book signing - within Vroman's Bookstore on East Colorado Boulevard.
Portis' latest book, which, like her other published works, was created for children, follows a little brown bird whose decision to stray from the norm has a ripple effect on its surrounding neighborhood. Using themes such as independence and individualism, as well as a myriad of colorful illustrations, the book serves to inform young readers that it is perfectly acceptable to march to the beat of their own drum - a lesson that even some adults have yet to learn.
As a sizable turnout is expected, those interested in attending are encouraged to arrive early. Vroman's noted that those who do choose to attend the event will be asked to purchase at least one copy of Portis' latest book from the business to participate in the signing event. However, for every copy of Froodle that individuals buy, they will be allowed to bring up to three additional copies of older titles to be autographed.
Author boasts impressive resume, accomplishments
Froodle is the fifth book that Portis has had published, representing her growth as both an author and artist. A graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles School of Fine Art, she went on to act as creative director for Disney Consumer Products for a number of years before concentrating on creating exciting, entertaining and educational books for children. A current resident of Studio City, she continues to hone her craft and exercise her imagination when not making public appearances.
Two of her previous works, titled "Not a Box" and "A Penguin Story," were named New York Times Best Illustrated Books in 2007 and 2009, respectively. In addition, her book "Not a Stick" was named a NYT Bestseller, and featured on the Martha Stewart Show. Her other notable works, "Princess Super Kitty" and "Kindergarten Diary," have also received critical acclaim.
As Portis' reputation has grown with each release, it is appropriate that Vroman's will act as the venue for her upcoming event. The bookstore, which was founded in 1894 by Adam Clark Vroman, continues to be seen as a cultural landmark within the City of Roses as well as the Golden State. In addition to being an accomplished business owner and voracious reader, Vroman was a burgeoning photography enthusiast - once earning the adulation of Ansel Adams for his diverse, stoic images.
