Why should Monterey residents visit Cannery Row?

Once called "Ocean View Avenue," Monterey's Cannery Row was renamed in honor of John Steinbeck, author of "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Of Mice and Men," in January 1958. This section of the city gives visitors easy access to local artists' galleries, specialty shops and world-class attractions. Additionally, more than 25 restaurants provide visitors a blend of flavors.

There are several reasons why you'll want to visit Cannery Row, including its activities, restaurants and shopping.

Stay active at Cannery Row
You won't need a car to explore much of Cannery Row, as this area provides attendees a collection of green and marine activities. Try bike riding, kayaking, scuba diving and more for a chance to enjoy the natural delights of Monterey.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium remains a popular attraction, and lies on the edge of the coastline. It was founded in 1984, and has over 100 exhibit tanks featuring a broad selection of underwater life. See jellyfish, penguins, seahorses, sea otters and more with a trip to this aquarium.

A taste of Cannery Row
Many visitors appreciate the flavors available at Cannery Row establishments. Plenty of options are accessible, including American, Chinese, Mexican and seafood restaurants.

Additionally, Monterey County tasting tours take wine connoisseurs through three blocks of Cannery Row, and explorers can sample some of the finest and most versatile varieties in the world. According to the Monterey County Vinters and Growers Association, Monterey Wine Country contains approximately 85 vinters and growers. Some of these produce exceptional Chardonnay, Merlot and other varieties that you'll be able to enjoy on the aforementioned wine tasting tours.

Shop 'til you drop at Cannery Row
